After a sleepless red-eye flight I was off to downtown London that morning. I took a bus & subway in. Took a subway & bus back but missed my hotel stop requiring a 40 euro cab ride back. Did not stray far but walked about 5 miles circling Trafalgar Square.
May 30 – June 13
This is the series of 10 Band of Brothers Shows. Thus starts the trip. Might need Google to understand some of the references.
We travel along Shows 2-10. We watched each show on bus either before or after we visited the location. I will note pictures or visits assocated with show. Also the layout of this webpage & pictures follows the trip sequence more or less thanks to the marvels of the iphone camera. Maginot line was an exception. A tour generally is designed around 1 main characther, Grant, Patton, Eisenhower, etc. In this tour, Dick Winters was a little pious, predictably modest, & straight as an arrow; although he was a great leader & beloved & respected by soldiers. Not easy in that context. Was promoted twice during course of tour from Platoon Leader to Battalion XO. Did a great service for our country & reputation. Wish there was more like him especially today.
Trip could be interesting or could be boring. Sometimes we made a long bus trip for an insignificant event in the context of th war. Rather see ‘breakout’ from Normandy (Operation Cobra) than Hagenau for instance. Historian would give short summary at each location (if you timed it right) then give us bulk of time to wander around which always seemed too little or too much. Hard to please 33 American Adults. Trip was definitely worth it though. I learned alot & changed my opinions alot too: The West Europeans appreciate our sacrifice!!
